Hops
Aurora (Super Styrian®)
Aurora is a cross between Northern Brewer and TG hops of unknown origin. It is an average early variety, reaching its optimal ripeness between 23rd and 30th August. Plants are forming medium wide cylinder, side shots are 60 cm long and grow also on the bottom part of the stem. Aurora is cultivated in Slovenia. It needs a medium planting density. The average cones are 28 mm long and weight 15 g per 100 dry pieces. They are dense, of deep green
colour and do not get shattered when picked by a picking machine.
CHEMICAL STRUCTURE AND BREWING EVALUATIONS
Aurora has an intense and pleasant hoppy aroma. It contains 6.5 % – 9.5 % of α-acids (22.0 – 26.0 % of cohumulone). The ratio between α- and β-acids is approximately 1.8. The essential oil content varies from 0.9 to 1.6 ( ml/100g cone dry basic ) . The ratio between α-humulene and β-caryophyllene in the essential oil is about 3.2. Aurora has a very good storage stability. Beer prepared with this variety has good organoleptical scores.
The yield of α-acids is very good when brewing with this variety. Aurora is very suitable for extraction and for combination with other varieties in the brewing process.
